OUR FIRST TRIP'S JOURNAL
18 NOV 2007
Arrived in Bangkok in the afternoon and we travelled to Mae Sot village to stay over for a night.

19 NOV 2007

We left the village at 5.30am. The air is chilly as our pick-up van sped along the long and straight roads to the refugee camp.

We started our workshop in the late morning and the response of the students was great. Triston and Alex taught them the basics of photography in theory and practical. After which, they explored their camp to capture the photographs that they want to keep.

20 NOV 2007

Hours before the sunrise, Alex, Triston, Annie and a group of enthusiastic students climbed the mountain behind their village. The path up the mountain was steep, and they have to rely on teamwork to help one another to climb up safely. Little did they realise that they are about to catch one of the most beautiful sunrises in their life.

Every sunrise symbolises a brand new day and a brand new life. They were all in awe when they saw the beauty of Mother Nature right before their eyes.

These are some of the photos taken by these students:

Even though they have been living in this camp for years, they told us that it is their first time that they ever saw sunrise and they felt really inspired by Mother Nature.

We continued our workshop in the afternoon where we reviewed their photographs that they have taken over the past 3 days.

There is a computer room at the camp. In this small and cramped room, they presented their photographs and shared their stories behind it. Some of their thoughts and photographs were close to their heart and we thought that they were well-taken for beginners who had just started photography for a short span of time.

After our dinner, a group of 20s-30s refugees came to our hut. We chatted and they shared with us their dreams and thoughts of being a refugee. They have lost their sense of identity and hope. Some of them are looking forward to the third country, while others wish that they can return to their "real" home.

We learnt that these refugees are well educated in collegues and universities, but due to the political problems, they had to be dropped out of school and become refugees in this camp.

21 NOV 2007

It's our last day in the refugee camp today. We had our last sharing with the refugees before we pack up and bid goodbye. Telephone numbers and best wishes were exchanged as we hopped onto our vehicle and leave the gates of the refugee camp.

22 NOV 2007 : BEFORE WE HEAD HOME

Spent a day in Bangkok catching up with our friends who live there and caught the evening flight back to Singapore.
While waiting for our flight, we discuessed about the thoughts and possiblities of fulfilling these dreams and needs of the refugees
